Wild camping in Italy – what you need to know

Pizza, pasta and spectacular nature, from rolling hills and lush fields of flowers to extensive sandy beaches and rugged coastlines – if you want to get to know “La Dolce Vita” in a completely different way, you need to get out of the big Italian cities and into adventure. And there’s no better way to do that than wild camping, is there?
Do you want to experience unique freedom and spend the night in a tent or camper van in the great outdoors in Italy? The question arises as to whether wild camping is even permitted in Italy. If so, what do you need to bear in mind? We have taken a closer look at this for you in this article.
Can you go wild camping in Italy?
To put it in a nutshell: No. As in Germany, wild camping is generally not permitted in Italy. If you spend the night in a tent or camper in the middle of the countryside and not on officially designated campsites or rest areas, you could face a fine of between €100 and €500.
What do we mean by generally prohibited? There are also gray areas and “loopholes” when wild camping in Italy, as the laws differ from region to region. As with us, you are more or less legally allowed to spend the night away from campsites in your motorhome to restore your fitness to drive and recharge your batteries for the journey ahead. There are even some official campsites for this purpose. However, it is forbidden to make yourself at home here, i.e. to set up chairs and tables. In addition, it is usually not permitted to stay longer than one night.
An exception to wild camping in Italy also applies if you are setting off on a hike in the Alps. Here, bivouacking in a one-man tent is permitted as long as you only spend one night in one place.
High fines in tourist areas for wild camping in Italy
Tourist regions in particular are subject to the strictest controls. If you are caught wild camping on a beach, for example, you could face a hefty fine of at least €300. The fact that wild camping in Italy is so strictly enforced here may be due to the fact that the idea of camping in the middle of the sea under the starry skies of Bella Italia is generally very popular.
What alternatives are there to wild camping in Italy?
Due to the legal situation, wild camping in Italy is only for the “brave”. Fortunately, you don’t have to give up your road trip to the land of culinary delights altogether, as there are some notable alternatives to wild camping in Italy. These include
- official campsites
- Small campsites offered by farms
- Parking spaces offered by private individuals on their property
It may also be worth asking the local authority directly. In the regions of Lombardy and Tuscany, for example, it is up to the municipalities to prohibit or approve wild camping. And it is generally known that Tuscany has one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. Another example: In Piedmont, you can stay in one place for 48 hours if you can no longer get a pitch on an official campsite. To do this, you must obtain an official permit at least 24 hours in advance. Check the general guidelines of the regions in advance.
